IIT Madras awarded 3,518 degrees to 3,106 students during its 63rd Convocation, with four students receiving prestigious awards for academic excellence and overall achievements. The degrees awarded included undergraduate, postgraduate, joint and dual degree programmes, along with 511 PhDs.The convocation also recognised students who achieved the highest academic performance and demonstrated excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities. The top honours included the President of India Prize, Bharat Ratna M Visvesvaraya Memorial Prize, Institute Merit Prize, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Prize and Governor’s Prize.Four students receive prestigious awards at convocationThe institute honoured students across different categories for their outstanding achievements. Degrees awarded across engineering, management and research programmesDuring the convocation, IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti awarded degrees to 3,106 graduates. The graduating students included 812 B.Tech students, 302 Dual Degree B.Tech students, 617 M.Tech students, 143 M.Sc students, 123 M.A students, 53 Executive MBA students, 84 MBA students, 32 PG Diploma students and 201 M.S students.The 511 PhD degrees awarded during the ceremony included 16 joint degrees with universities in foreign countries.President of Zanzibar highlights role of technology and innovationAddressing the graduating students, Chief Guest Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, spoke about the role of emerging technologies and the responsibility of graduates in shaping the future.“Every generation inherits the world as it is. Yours has the extraordinary opportunity — and responsibility — to shape the world as it ought to be,” Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi said.He added that artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology and quantum technologies were changing the way people live, learn and work. “Every great innovation presents humanity with a choice. It can deepen inequality or expand opportunity. It can divide communities or unite them. That choice belongs not to technology itself, but to those who create it,” he said.IIT Madras Zanzibar campus also highlightedDr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi also spoke about IIT Madras Zanzibar, India’s first international IIT campus, which offers IIT Madras academic degrees.“The establishment of IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first international campus of IIT Madras, represents far more than an educational milestone. It reflects a shared belief that knowledge should know no borders and that excellence should never be confined by geography,” he said.Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said IIT Madras Zanzibar had entered a transformative phase as a global higher education hub in East Africa. The campus currently has 130 students, with representation from Tanzania, India, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Zambia.Dignitaries attend 63rd ConvocationDr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Madras, presided over the convocation. Other dignitaries present included Hon’ble Lela Mohamed Mussa, Minister of Education and Vocational Training of Zanzibar, and Her Excellency Mrs. Anisa Kapufi Mbega, High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania to India.Congratulating the graduating students, Dr. Pawan Goenka said, “A little over two years ago, IIT Madras opened its first international campus in Zanzibar. Today, its President stands before our graduating class in Chennai. That is not a coincidence of geography. It is a partnership between our peoples, built on a shared belief that education, innovation and human capital are the true foundations of lasting development.”Following the main convocation, department-level degree distribution programmes were held, where students received their degrees in person.
