Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain have strengthened their already powerful attack by signing Spain star Ferran Torres from Barcelona on a five-year contract.PSG confirmed the transfer on Saturday but did not reveal the fee. French sports newspaper L’Equipe reported that the club paid around 50 million euros ($58 million) for the 26-year-old forward, who will wear the No. 9 shirt.
Torres’ big move to PSG
Torres became a World Cup hero after scoring Spain’s winning goal in extra time of the final against Argentina. Coming on as a substitute, he reacted quickly to a loose ball and fired a left-footed shot into the net.Reflecting on the goal, Torres said it was “scored by 47 million people,” referring to Spain’s population.The PSG move is the second major transfer of Torres’ career. Barcelona signed him from Manchester City in January 2022 for a reported 55 million euros. Before joining City, he played for Valencia.Torres scored 65 goals in 207 appearances for Barcelona, including 21 goals in all competitions last season. However, his contract was due to expire next year.
PSG’s attacking strength
Torres will reunite with PSG coach Luis Enrique, who handed him his Spain debut in 2020. Enrique has since guided PSG to two straight Champions League titles and three consecutive French league titles.PSG already have several attacking stars, including Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.The French champions have started the season strongly, beating Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup. They will next face Lens in the Trophée des Champions on Sunday.
