Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 against India in the third ODI at New Chandigarh may have looked like another masterclass from the West Indies captain, but the innings was anything but ordinary.Hope produced a record-breaking knock to guide West Indies to a stunning five-wicket victory while chasing 352, their highest successful run chase in ODI cricket. West Indies complete their biggest-ever ODI chase

The magnitude of Hope’s innings becomes even clearer when viewed alongside the team record. India had posted a daunting 351/7 after opting to bat first, with KL Rahul producing an unbeaten 129 off 87 balls. Rohit Sharma narrowly missed out on a century, scoring 92, while Ruturaj Gaikwad added 57.Despite losing Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli cheaply, India recovered strongly. Gill fell for one and Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck by Jayden Seales, but Rohit and Gaikwad steadied the innings before Rahul provided the late acceleration.West Indies, however, never allowed the asking rate to dictate the chase.John Campbell and Hope raced away at the start before Campbell was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj. Amir Jangoo then joined Hope and the pair put West Indies firmly in control.Jangoo scored a valuable 67, while his partnership with Hope crossed the hundred-run mark. West Indies reached 148/1 at the end of 20 overs and continued to remain ahead of the required rate. Jangoo eventually departed, but Hope remained the constant throughout. The captain had to dig deep late in the innings after beginning to feel discomfort around his groin. He also had to shoulder even more responsibility because Jewel Andrew was unavailable to bat after suffering an injury.Hope briefly went into survival mode, taking 44 balls to move from 87 to 126 without finding the boundary. But once the final phase arrived, he switched gears spectacularly.Alongside Gudakesh Motie, Hope attacked the Indian bowlers and West Indies smashed eight boundaries in just 14 deliveries to take the chase away from India.West Indies eventually reached 352/5 in 48.2 overs, winning with 10 balls to spare.
