Egypt defender Yasser Ibrahim gave the Pharaohs a dream start against Argentina in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash, heading home in the 15th minute to put the African side 1-0 ahead against the defending champions. The 33-year-old centre-back rose highest to meet a cross inside the penalty area, powering a header past Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to score just his second international goal.Born in Mansoura on February 10, 1993, Ibrahim has spent his entire professional career in Egypt. After starting out with Mansoura SC, he moved to Zamalek in 2013 before a loan spell and subsequent permanent switch to Smouha. Since joining Al Ahly in January 2019, he has established himself as one of Egypt’s most dependable defenders. At club level, Ibrahim has made more than 225 appearances for Al Ahly, scoring 15 goals across all competitions. During his time with the Cairo giants, he has won five Egyptian Premier League titles, four CAF Champions League crowns, four Egypt Cups and five Egyptian Super Cups, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most successful defenders.Ibrahim made his senior Egypt debut in March 2022 and has now earned 23 international caps. His goal against Argentina was only his second for the national team, but it could hardly have come on a bigger stage. The experienced defender has been a key figure in Egypt’s run at the 2026 World Cup, starting four of the team’s five matches before the knockout clash. His towering header against Argentina also marked his first goal of the tournament. While not known for his attacking output, Ibrahim has built his career on defensive consistency, aerial dominance and leadership. Against Lionel Messi and Argentina, however, the veteran centre-back grabbed the headlines by delivering one of the biggest moments in Egypt’s World Cup history.
